Maria Kolesnikova is “one of the brave women fighting for a democratic Belarus”. This was stated by German State Minister for Culture and Media Claudia Roth.
“Four years ago, she was brutally arrested by Lukashenko's regime and arbitrarily sentenced to 11 years in prison,” Roth said.
She called the conditions of Kolesnikova's detention “deeply inhumane”. “Food deprivation, denial of necessary medical care, and prolonged solitary confinement are commonplace in the treatment of more than 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus.”
“These brutal repressive methods demonstrate Lukashenka's cowardice and hatred, but they will certainly not silence the Belarusian democratic movement and its allies.”
“Masha, we will not forget you. Our thoughts are with you and your family. We stand with you and the people of Belarus until a free and democratic Belarus becomes possible,” the minister said.
